January 7 – With the European winter transfer window now open, any club looking to buy at the top end of the player market is going to have to spend over €100 million, and to buy at the very top they would need more than €200 million – if the players were for sale.

PSG and France star Kylian Mbappe continues to live up to his billing with a high transfer valuation tag of €218 million, according to data from the CIES Football Observatory. Spurs and England captain Harry Kane is second on the valuation list at €200.3 million.

“Among the 27 footballers with an estimated value of more than €100 million, 16 play in the Premier League, five in the Liga, three in the Serie A, two in the Ligue 1 and one in the Bundesliga. Eleven nations have representatives with an estimated value of more than €100m: Brazil (6 players), England (5), France (5), Argentina (2), Portugal (2), Belgium (2), Egypt (1), Germany (1), Senegal (1), Uruguay (1) and Italy (1),” say the CIES report authors.

Looking at the top 50 payers, 31 out of the 50 play in the Premier League with none of them at Manchester City and eight playing at league leaders Liverpool.

In the second 50 players, another 15 play their football in the Premier League – 46% of the world’s top 100 most valuable players ply their trade in England.

The transfer values for all big-5 league players are based on a methodology and algorithm developed by the CIES Football Observatory.
