Cairo Stadium out scores Accra counterpart to set new AFCON record

July 12 – The Cairo International Stadium (CIS) has set a new record beating the previous record of hosting 32 AFCON matches by Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana.

CIS hosted eight matches in the 2019 CAF Nations Cup currently going-on in Egypt to tally a number of 33 AFCON matches and out score popular Ghanian Accra Stadium,

According to #mundial11, the 2019 quarter final tie between Nigeria and South Africa, in which the Super Eagles qualified to the semi-final, marked the 33rd AFCON match in the CIS.

Egypt has hosted AFCON a record 5 times while Ghana has entertained the continental showpiece four times.

Opened in 1965, Cairo International Stadium was renovated just before the kick-off of the AFCON 2019 which was awarded to Egypt at short notice in place of the original host Cameroon.
