Doubts raised over Cameroon’s ability to host AFCON 2021

August 9 – Having been stripped of hosting rights for this year’s African Cup of Nations due to lack of preparations, Cameroon may not even be ready to stage the showpiece event in two years’ time, according to their all-time leading goalscorer.

“For the next CAN, Cameroon is late,” said Patrick Mboma who won the competition in 2000 and 2002.

Mboma made this statement in Abidjan where he was a special guest of the Ivorian Football Federation at the start of their 2019-20 season.

Designated to host CAN 2019, Cameroon was replaced at short notice by Egypt after the African Football Confederation (CAF) found that the country was not ready from the point of view of infrastructure.

Cameroon was handed 2021 instead with the blessing of CAF president Ahmad Ahmad even though the hosting was originally supposed to go to Ivory Coast who said they “deplored” the sudden switch.
