Bruges double sending off in stoppage time, a Champions League record?

November 27 – In what was surely a first, Bruges had two players sent off after a stoppage-time equaliser away at Galatasaray on Tuesday night in the Champions League.

Krepin Diatta’s goal saw the Belgian champions snatch a 1-1 draw in in Turkey but their players were so ecstatic two of them were dismissed by the Slovakian referee.

Diatta took his shirt off to celebrate and was promptly shown a second yellow,  the first player to score and be sent off in a Champions League game since Fernando Torres in April 2016 for Atletico Madrid against Barcelona.

Then,  as part of the same celebrations, Clinton Mata – who set up the goal – kicked the corner flag, breaking it in the process and he too was sent off.

The pair will now miss their final Champions League game at home to Real Madrid. Despite all that, Bruges can no longer qualify for the Champions League knockout stages but are favourites to squeeze into a Europa League spot ahead of Galatasaray.
