Messi still leads way in European performance ranking, Mbappe ranks 3rd and Mahrez 4th

December 10 – He may starting to look towards his retirement but Lionel Messi still tops a ranking of the best performing players across 35 European leagues.

An index of players produced by stats firm InStat gives Messia a score of 401, 24 index points ahead of Ajax forward Hakim Ziyech.

Eight players from the English Premier League feature in the top 20 with Manchester City’s Riyadh Mahrez ranking fourth with 362 index points. There are three Man City players in the top 20 and three Liverpool player with Andrew Robertson their highest at 10th with 353 index points.

PSG also has three players in the top 20 with Kylian Mbappe ranking highest at third position with 366 ranking points.

“Per position, the top three ranked footballers are Frederik Rönnow, Wojciech Szczesny and Marwin Hitz among goalkeepers, Virgil van Dijk, Joël Veltman and Willy Boly among centre backs, Andrew Robertson, Ricardo Pereira and Ben Chilwell among full backs, Kevin de Bruyne, Papu Gómez and Marco Verratti among midfielders, as well as Lionel Messi, Hakim Ziyech and Kylian Mbappé among forwards,” report the CIES Football Observatory analysts.
