January 24 – Former Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajor has emerged as a possible contender to challenge Luis Rubiales (pictured) for the presidency of the Spanish FA when Rubiales stands for re-election later this year.
Spanish press reports say Rajor could replace former Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas as a contender if the latter decides not to take on Rubiales himself.
Rubiales was only elected in May, 2018, but his feud with outspoken La Liga boss Javier Tebas over a series of issues has highlighted a widening split in the administration of Spanish football. Tebas was recently quoted as saying: “I prefer anyone to Rubiales,” saying the RFEF boss “is not qualified to lead” the federation.
Last week, Ana Munoz resigned as Vice President of Integrity at the RFEF over the decision to stage the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
