Manchester City fans fly into trouble with Munich air crash taunt

January 30 – Manchester’s two rival clubs face being sanctioned after tensions ran high between both sets of supporters during their League semi-final second leg tie on Wednesday.

Despite winning 1-0 at the home of the Premier League champions, United lost 3-2 on aggregate meaning Pep Guardiola’s team will try to win the competition for a third successive year and a fifth time in seven on March 1.

However a social media post showed fans in the Manchester City section making aeroplane gestures referring to the infamous 1958 Munich air disaster, in which 23 people died, including eight United players and the 62nd anniversary of which is on February 6. There were also witness accounts of seats ripped and thrown from the away end.

United manager  Ole Gunnar Solskjaer condemned the latest trouble.

“We want rivalry but let’s keep it at a sane level and let’s make sure we eradicate that now,” he said.
