Sinclair notches her 186th goal as final four Concacaf teams hunt Tokyo Olympic slots

February 5 – Canada secured top a semi-final match-up with Costa Rica in the Concacaf women’s Olympic qualifiers, avoiding the all-powerful US women’s team who have yet to concede a goal and will face Mexico in the other semi-final.

Canada won their group with a 2-0 win over Mexico 2-0 and yet another goal from prolific striker Christine Sinclair at HEB Park in Edinburg, Texas.

Sinclair extended her all-time (male and female) international world goal-scoring record to 186. Sinclair had equalled and gone past Abby Wambach’s record of 184 goals in an earlier group game. The highest goal scorer in men’s international football remains Iran’s Ali Daei on 109 goals in 149 appearances.

The two winners of Fridays semi-finals at the Dignity Health Sports Park, in Los Angeles, will qualify for the Tokyo Olympic tournament later this summer. The final of the tournament will also be played in LA on Sunday.

Canada and the US are the stand-put favourites to compete the final. Neither team have conceded a goal with the US netting 18 times and Canada 22 times.
