March 30 – The English FA has informed clubs in both the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship that they will not receive any financial support from the governing body during the coronavirus lockdown. The FA, however, remains committed to completing the season.
Last week, the FA closed down women’s football, voiding the season for all tiers of the women’s pyramid from the National League down and as the global health crisis also paralyses the United Kingdom the governing body has admitted that women’s clubs will be left to their own devices to weather the financial fallout.
The FA is also considering the possibility in which clubs in the top-two tiers of the game would fold, according to The Guardian. Such a scenario would be a major blow to the game.
But the FA said it “remains in consultation with the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship Board and clubs regarding the most appropriate way to complete the current season; including the Barclays FA Women’s Super League Academy.”
On March 13, the Women’s Super League was suspended. Manchester City topped the table with a one-point advantage over Chelsea. Arsenal ranked in third, four points off the lead. In the Championship, Aston Villa led the pack.
