Sevilla reportedly opens €5m discussion with Betway, despite Spanish gaming re-regulation

May 19 – Seasons may be struggling to complete but already bookmakers are starting to make sponsorship plays for next season.

Betway is reportedly in discussions with Sevilla to replace Marathonbet as the club’s main shirt sponsor in time for the start of the 2020/2021 season.

If concluded, Sevilla would be Betway’s biggest Spanish club sponsorship, and would add to deals with Alaves, CD Leganes and Levante UD.

There is a reported €5 million price tag on the deal.

However, it is far from a done deal as Spain is in the process of re-regulating its gambling regulation with bookmaker sponsorship and promotion high on the agenda after the government fast-tracked provisions of the approved Royal Decree on advertising, banning all betting-related advertising during sports broadcasts.

Club and broadcasters have argued against this action saying that they have been given no time to fulfil existing contracts.

Betway appear to be gambling on the regulation covering gambling sponosorship being dropped or at least postponed as government gives leeway to clubs to shore up revenues in the new economic and operational norm.
