‘Crazy’ transfer fees won’t come back soon, says rule-following Mourinho

March 28 – Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho, who has spent big for much of his managerial career, says there will be fewer “crazy” transfers after top-flight football returns from its Covid-19 shutdown.

The Premier League club bought Steven Bergwijn for £27 million from PSV Eindhoven in January and broke their club record to sign Tanguy Ndombele for a reported £55 million last summer under the previous management team. Ndombele has failed to command a regular starting spot since Mourinho took over.

The former Benfica, Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United manager, who has had little time to stamp his authority on Tottenham having only joined in November, believes the Premier League, and leagues around the world, will need a different approach with the coronavirus crisis hitting clubs’ finances.

“It is normal you are going to have a different market, I don’t see the world – especially the football world – ready for some crazy numbers we used to have and the crazy investments that some clubs and some leagues are used to doing,” Mourinho told Sky.

“The first question after that is when will be the transfer window? I don’t think it will be in July or August, I think it has to go back further than that.”

Mourinho can see Spurs and other clubs being “sensible, balanced and not going to spend rivers of money.”

“It is the last thing we are thinking, we are not thinking about it. There are no talks about it. We think about safety and following every rule.”
