FC Sion chief calls on Competition Commission to investigate Swiss league

June 5 – The controversial boss of Swiss club FC Sion is seeking to halt the resumption of the Swiss league by requesting an official investigation into the Swiss Football League by the country’s Competition Commission (COMCO).

Christian Constantin (pictured), who in March terminated the contracts of nine players for refusing a wage cut following the escalation of Covid-19 that forced domestic campaigns throughout Europe to be stopped, claims the league is guilty of “abuse of a dominant position”.

Late last month 17 of the leading 20 clubs in Switzerland voted for the season to resume behind closed doors – but not Sion.

COMCO director Patrik Ducrey was quoted as saying: “As it stands, I cannot say more because no decision has been made on this matter.”

In other words, the Swiss competition authority has – so far – not officially opened an investigation, as requested by FC Sion who are just three places off the bottom of the Swiss top division.

Any decision has to take place fast since the resumption of the Championship, behind closed doors, is scheduled for June 19.
