June 11 – The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool on June 21, when the latter could win their first domestic league crown for 30 years, has been given the all clear to played at Everton’s home ground of Goodison Park but police have urged fans to watch the behind-closed-doors fixture from the safety of their own homes.
Liverpool could claim the Premier League title that day if Manchester City lose to Arsenal next Wednesday when English fixtures resume for the first time since the Covid-19 lockdown began in March.
That had led to concerns fans could congregate in breach of restrictions, with the high-profile fixture one of five games that police had originally requested be switched to neutral venues.
As recently as Tuesday, Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium was reportedly being suggested as one possible venue though it has now been agreed to keep the game on Merseyside following meetings involving the two clubs, health authorities, police and the local council.
With the derby to be broadcast free to air, local police chief Rob Carden commented: “We want to ensure everyone enjoys the game from the safety of their own home. The main concern was always public health … we have been guided by experts and the government.
“We would urge supporters to do the right thing – stay at home and keep your family, friends and neighbours safe.”
