Ceferin suggests French league finish was premature

June 18 – UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has commented for the first time publicly on the decision to shut down French football while every other major league is restarting.

Last month the French Football Federation (FFF) wrote to UEFA to justify the premature termination of its competitions and make sure their clubs are not penalised.

French federation chief Noël Le Graët reportedly wrote specifically to Ceferin saying France had no option but to cease playing because of the government mandate forbidding sports events, even behind closed doors, until September.

UEFA ideally wanted all leagues to try and resume and have remained silent until now on the hugely contentious French move that has prompted legal action at home.

Ceferin clearly believes France should be resuming their campaign like the rest of the so-called Big Five.

“First of all, about the decision not to resume the league was the decision of the French league and [the] French Football Federation,” Ceferin told Wednesday’s on-line press conference following UEFA’s executive committee meeting.

“My personal opinion is that the decision was [made] quite early.”
