LaLiga’s Granada renews Winamax short deal as appeal against gambling ad ban goes to EU

August 19 – Despite the strong threat of LaLiga’s clubs being prevented earning sponsorship income from the gaming and betting sector, another club has announced an online gambler as its main shirt sponsor.

French online poker operator Winamax has renewed its shirt sponsorship of Granada CF in a two-year deal. Winamax started with Granada CF in 2019 when it launched in Spain.

It was an inspired sponsorship for Winamax as Granada, LaLiga’s smallest club in the top flight, finished seventh in the league and qualified for European competition. No value has been given for the two-year extension.

Spain’s federal advertising code will prohibit gambling sponsorships from October following Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs issuing a blanket ban on gambling sponsorships of sports clubs, sanctioned by the federally approved Royal Decree on Advertising.

That decree is being challenged at the European Commission with Spanish licensed bookmakers and media owners appealing via online gambling trade association Jdigital.

The appeal maintains that the Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs has violated its position of authority by radically altering Decree laws that had been formally approved and agreed on by Spanish licensed incumbents.

Jdigital says the Spanish government has breached European business laws and fair market practices and did so without any formal consultation on changes.
