FIFA turns to tech firms to improve VAR

November 20 – FIFA are taking steps to ensure marginal offside calls are determined by automated technology rather than the controversial VAR system of dotted lines and a second pair of eyes.

The lines have left fans and pundits totally confused throughout the season and FIFA wants a new system to provide greater clarity and is turning to technology firms for help.

Three companies have reportedly put their names forward to enter the next development phase in hope of providing a permanent solution to the problem.

FIFA said companies would be provided with ‘anonymised datasets’ of offside decisions based on which they should present possible solutions.

“The aim of this development phase is to further improve the algorithms of the systems based on a collection of datasets from hundreds of different offside incidents,” a statement said.
