New Balance build Japanese presence with FC Tokyo deal

December 3 – Sportswear and boot brand New Balance has expanded its partnerships in Japan with the addition of J-League club FC Tokyo in a multi-year sponsorship.

Starting with the 2021 season, FC Tokyo will be New Balance’s second club in Japan, alongside Sagan Tosu.

New Balance will now create new club kits and training apparel, as well as a limited edition retail product range.

The US-owned brand has targeted Asia as a growth opportunity for its football business as it pursues its aim of becoming “one of the top 3 global athletic brands”.

“The Club has a fantastic story to tell and we’re excited to be a vital part of that. FC Tokyo is the number one team in an iconic city and one of the most promising sides in Asia. We’re looking forward to creating a range of innovative and high-performance on pitch products that will capture the true spirit of the team and its supporters,” said Kenny McCallum, general manager of New Balance Football.

Established in 1935, FC Tokyo has won three Japanese domestic cup trophies.

President of Tokyo FC, Naoki Ogane, said: “We are delighted to have signed a new Official Supplier Agreement with New Balance. Covid-19 will still influence to the 2021 season, which will continue to be a difficult environment for the J League and for FC Tokyo.
