December 14 – Kenyan media are boycotting the country’s top flight in response to authorities there selectively banning individual journalists from selected games.
Kenya’s Standard Group PLC publishing house has halted coverage of all FKF Premier League games until the ban is lifted.
The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) has criticised the decision to lock selected journalists out of the recent fixture between champions Gor Mahia and Ulinzi Stars – apparently because of a contractual dispute between the Kenyan FA and league sponsors StarTimes.
Ironically, Saturday’s incident happened as Kenya celebrated its 57th Independence Day with President Uhuru Kenyatta having led the nation in marking the occasion – at the very same venue as the game in question.
