Conmebol boost women’s game with bi-annual Copa America and new club competition

December 18 – Conmebol has said that it will organise the women’s Copa America every two years from 2022 onwards. The organisation’s president Alejandro Dominguez has also proposed an intercontinental club championship for the women’s game.

The South American ruling body is staging a women’s football congress to wrap up 2020 and to underline the growing importance of the women’s game to the continent. Conmebol announced that its flagship women’s tournament will be staged on a bi-annually from 2022 is a big step for competition first played in 1991 and which serves as pathway to the World Cup.

Conmebol is also in talks with UEFA to stage an intercontinental women’s club final between the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the Champions League, a game that would mirror the old intercontinental playoff that was later replaced by the club world cup in the men’s game.

“In recent years, Conmebol has had significant growth, such as, for example, almost five times more registered professional players, four new tournaments, training of more than 600 female soccer coaches; talks and workshops for the players who participate in the tournaments and, in addition, the inclusion of women referees in the men’s championships ” said Conmebol general-secretary Jose Astigarraga.
