Email blunder leaves Cameroon striker Choupo-Moting benched in Munich

March 23 – In what is being described as one of the most bizarre administrative gaffes, Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has been ruled out of captaining his native Cameroon this month against Cape Verde and Rwanda in Group F of African Nations Cup qualifiers after his federation accidentally emailed themselves instead of his club.

Cameroon’s Portuguese coach Toni Conceicao thought he had called up the striker, capped 52 times, for his squad ahead of the upcoming fixtures.

But German press reports say Cameroon football chiefs sent the invite to the wrong email address as a result of which the Invincible Lions will finish their Group F campaign without their 32-year-old talisman.

Fortunately, Cameroon are set to top the group regardless, already sitting six points clear of Mozambique in second and Cape Verde in third.

Choupo-Moting has scored five goals in 24 appearances for Bayern, primarily from the bench, since joining as back-up to Robert Lewandowski last summer.
