June 21 – With four Thai clubs entering Asian Champions League action for the first time this week, the AFC has moved fast to secure True as their new media partner in Thailand for all AFC club competitions in the 2021 season.
True will have both AFC Champions League and the AFC Cup rights. It is already the broadcast home of the English Premier League, NBA and various other tennis and golf competitions in Thailand.
AFC competitions will be covered via TrueVision’s sports channels as well as its OTT services.
Thailand is hosting three AFC Champions League (East) Groups, and three of the four Thai clubs – BG Pathum United, Ratchaburi FC, and Port FC – will be playing at home. Chiangrai United are playing their group games centralised in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Dato’ Windsor John, the AFC General Secretary, said: “Our club competitions have grown tremendously over the years and the AFC is committed to ensuring that football remains the number one sport in the Continent. It is through our media partners like True that we are able to showcase the most attractive of Asian club football.”
Thailand has been a significant media market for the world’s premium sports competitions, and in particular the Premier League, with True being the broadcast market leader for those rights in the country. The AFC deal is a significant breakthrough for football in the region, positioning it alongside the world’s big competitions on the country’s biggest channels.
