Standard Liege given go-ahead to expand Stade Maurice Dufrasne

July 1 – Belgian club Standard Liege have been given the green light by to expand their stadium capacity from 28.700 to 32.000.

The Stade Maurice Dufrasne is one of the most intimidating grounds in Belgium with its steep stands. The stadium will undergo renovation and extension after Walloon authorities gave the go-ahead for those plans.

“This investment is a quality project skilfully combining sporting, commercial and societal opportunities,” said Walloon minister for economy Willy Borsus in a statement. “It also integrates the challenges of mobility, as well as the different forms of travel.”

Last summer, the local town hall had approved the plans before regional authorities shot them down. On the second submission and approval, Standard can now begin with the redevelopment of their stadium. The stadium upgrade will also include the introduction of a commercial centre and entertainment areas.

The stadium was inaugurated in 1909 and hosted three group-stage matches during Euro 2000.
