Police drop Rooney blackmail complaint over hotel pictures

July 28 – A complaint of blackmail in relation to photographs of former England captain Wayne Rooney has been dropped by police.

The complaint was reportedly received on Monday after images, which were shared widely online, appeared to show Rooney asleep (fully clothed) in a hotel room with unknown women posing beside him.

His representatives are said to have claimed he was being blackmailed for £10,000 in a case of entrapment but officers said they were satisfied that no offences had taken place

Some reports suggest Rooney’s £4.5 million a year job as manager of Championship club Derby County could be in jeopardy but there is no suggestion he acted inappropriately, or even he was aware of what was going on around him.

“Officers have spoken to the person involved and are satisfied that no offences have taken place,” a police statement said. “The person involved has also stated that they do not wish to take the matter any further.”
