Shevchenko quits Ukraine as head coach

August 2 – Andriy Shevchenko has left his role as head coach of Ukraine just a few weeks after guiding his country to the quarterfinals of Euro 2020.

After a five-year spell, the former playing legend has called time on his tenure.

“With hard work we’ve shown that we are capable of playing a modern style of football,” he said on Instagram. “Thanks to all the fans for your support and criticism. We’ve shown together that we can be competitive and exciting.”

The Ukrainian federation are yet to confirm his departure, nor have they commented.

Ukraine currently sit second, behind France, in their group for qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Shevchenko is his country’s record goalscorer, having netted 48 times for Ukraine . He is also a Ballon d’Or winner, being named the world’s best player at AC Milan in 2004.

He began his playing career at Dynamo Kyiv before joining Milan in 1999, where he won five major trophies including the Serie A title and Champions League.

He joined Chelsea in 2006 for £30 million, where he won the FA Cup and League Cup, before returning to Milan for a loan spell in 2008.
