UEFA brings in VAR for remainder of Qatar 2022 qualifiers

August 5 – UEFA is bringing in video assistant referees (VAR) for all remaining European Qualifier matches for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

UEFA said VAR will be operational from matchday 4 and includes all remaining qualifying matches taking place from September 2021.

“The initial plans to start using VAR in UEFA national team qualification competitions were postponed due to the logistical complications and risks associated with the COVD-19 pandemic,” said UEFA.

“The VAR implementation, which is being organised by UEFA, will be carried out on site at the stadium of the host association, with the use of specific vans supplied by the UEFA VAR providers.”

VAR is still not universally used across all confederations though Concacaf did introduce VAR for the first time at its Gold Cup in July. Most Qatar 2022 qualifiers globally will be played without the use of VAR.
