August 19 – PSV Eindhoven have partnered with Anycoin Direct in a two-season deal. The Dutch club will be one of the first major football clubs to have an entire sponsorship paid in Bitcoin.
Anycoin Direct is a European cryptocurrency broker that was established by a group of friends in the Eindhoven area in 2013 and has since grown to become a leading provider in the Netherlands.
In a statement, the Eindhoven outfit wrote that “PSV will be the first major football club in the EU to have the entire sponsorship paid in Bitcoin. Earlier this year the club worked with crypto technology for the first time, selling the NFT of its Europe cup 1 final victory on Benfica.”
“The possibilities and the future that the world of cryptocurrency offers is very promising,” said commercial director PSV Frans Janssen. “As a club in the heart of the Brainport region, we are always innovating, cryptocurrency fits well into this picture.”
Janssen immediately opened wallets to facilitate the transaction after the deal was done. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Growing up in the region PSV has always been very close to me,” said Anycoin COO Lennert Vlemmings. “As a technology company from the Brainport area we are very excited to be working with PSV. The payment in Bitcoin marks the next step for the adoption of cryptocurrency in the EU.”
