Guardiola sets limit on his remaining time at Man City

August 26 – Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has indicated that he will leave the Premier League champions in 2023 when his contract expires, and wants to venture into international football in the future.

“The next step will be a national team, if there is a possibility,” said Guardiola. “After seven years at this club, I think I’m going to have a break. I will need to rest after being somewhere so many years and also stop to evaluate what we’ve done and to try to learn from other coaches.

“If, during this process of stopping, there is a chance to coach a national team then I think I’d like that. I’d like to coach at a European Championship or Copa America or World Cup. I’d like to experience that.”

In the past, Guardiola has frequently been linked with a national team roles, but in November 2020 the Spaniard extended his City contract. He has won three league crowns at the club, but the holy grail, the Champions League, has remained elusive. Last season, City reached the final, but were defeated by Chelsea after Guardiola decided to play with no recognised defensive midfielder.

City lost their opening game of the 2021/22 season away to Tottenham Hotspur 1-0, but bounced back with a 5-0 victory against Norwich last weekend. On Saturday, they host Arsenal.
