Running out of gas: petrol crisis forces non-league games off

September 28 – More than 35 non-league matches in England due to have been played tonight have been postponed as a result of the shortage of fuel in some areas of the country.

Matches in the Isthmian League and Southern League – the seventh tier of the English pyramid – have been called off.

The entire programme in the Southern Combination Football League in the ninth and 10th tiers have also been postponed due to fuel-related issues.

Demand for fuel has gone through the roof in parts of the UK with filling stations forced to close due to a shortage of delivery drivers, prompting panic buying by the public.

Seven of the nine matches scheduled for the Isthmian League’s Premier Division tonight have been called off while at least four games from the same level of the Southern League also postponed.
