Crying over spilt milk. FA step in to investigate Manchester ‘Milkgate’ fracas

December 12 – The English Football Association have launched an investigation into the post-match incidents that marred last Sunday’s hotly anticipated Manchester derby when City ended United’s unbeaten 40-game home run and in the process set a Premier League record of 14 straight wins.

In what has been dubbed ‘Milkgate’ by the British media and has dominated the back pages ever since, reports suggest that United boss Jose Mourinho had milk and water thrown at him following the game that was watched in 189 countries across the globe. Mikel Arteta, part of City’s coaching team, was also reported to have suffered a cut in the alleged incidents.

Mourinho, whose provocative comments before the game about City players diving only served to inflame tensions, afterwards accused Pep Guardiola’s runaway leaders of being lucky even though his own equally expensively assembled team were outplayed.

British media reported that Mourinho was upset by City’s excessive celebrations after their 2-1 victory at Old Trafford which opened up an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

“The FA has contacted both clubs for their observations following reports of an incident after the Manchester derby yesterday,” the governing body said in a statement.
