September 2 – With the focus of UEFA’s men Champions League turning to clubs naming their squads for the last group qualifying stages, the Women’s Champions league round of 32 draw was held throwing up a rematch of Wolfsburg vs Chelsea clash from last season.
Wolfsburg won that match against the English champions and went on to lose in the final against three times champions Lyon. Lyon will open their campaign for a fourth title against Norway’s Alvadsnes.
The 2015/16 UEFA Women’s Champions League runners-up Wolfsburg face a rematch with Chelsea while both French contenders meet teams from Norway after the round of 32 draw was made.
The draw saw nine winners from the qualifying round groups join 21 seeded clubs for the knock-out round that will be played in October. The final will be played at the Cardiff City Stadium, Wales, on June 1.
Of the three other newcomers in their first Champions League season, Manchester City take on 2009 runners-up Zvezda-2005, Eskilstuna encounter former quarter-finalists Glasgow City and Sturm Graz tackle Zürich.
Twente are in the knockout phase for the fifth year running and will hope for a repeat of last season, when they knocked out Bayern München in the round of 32. They face Sparta Parague. Bayern open their campaign against Scotland’s Hibernian.
