Off/On €35m Modeste becomes first big money summer transfer to China

July 14 – Having initially rejected a move to China because of the terms of the deal, French striker Anthony Modeste has become the first big name European signing of the Chinese Super League’s close season transfer window after Bundesliga side Cologne announced his departure to Tianjin Quanjian for a reported €35 million.

Modeste, who scored 25 goals for Cologne last season, had appeared to be on his way to Tianjin and was already in China when Cologne discussions were initially terminated after the parties involved failed to strike a deal.

But the German club have now announced that “all relevant parties have reached an agreement” for Modeste to further his career in China.

Transfer activity in China has slowed down after clubs were forced to rein in their spending following the imposition of a 100% government tax on foreign players in order to boost the development of domestic talent.
