May 29 – There is one Champions League trophy that won’t be going to England this weekend, in fact it might not even remain in Europe.
On Friday the inaugural eChampions League final in Madrid will see eight of the world’s best FIFA 19 players compete on PlayStation, with the winner being awarded the trophy at the Estadio Metropolitano ahead of the UEFA Champions League final the following day.
Four of the eight finalists come from outside Europe – three from the US and one from Brazil. The winner will lso walk away with a $100,000 share of the $280,000 prize pot.
The finalists will play quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final. The qualified via a group stage played in Manchester.
“EA SPORTS FIFA captivates tens of millions around the world, and our deep integration within the many in-game experiences gives us exciting opportunities to connect the UEFA Champions League to players,” said Guy-Laurent Epstein, UEFA marketing director.
“We see the eChampions League competition as an important step in connecting with existing and new fans of the UEFA Champions League.”
