November 2 – Sports marketing agency Sportfive has picked up the commercial rights to Nigeria’s top tier league and the country’s national teams in a two-year contract starting this year.
The agreement was signed with the League Management Company Limited (LMC) which manages the 20-team Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Sportfive will be the exclusive sales representative and tasked with bringing in new commercial partners and the distribution of NPFL marketing rights. Sportfive said it “will furthermore provide the LMC and NFF with its vast service portfolio alongside distribution, production and commercialisation.”
The Super Eagles are probably Africa’s most recognisable national team brand but the Nigerians have struggled to secure significant major sponsorships, instead being primarily dependent on government support and FIFA grant money.
Idriss Akki, Managing Director at Sportfive Middle East & Africa, said: “The partnership with the LMC and NFF is a proof of the successful work we have done so far in African sports business. We are grateful for this shown trust and look forward to a successful cooperation that benefits the Nigerian football.”
