Pro-IRA-singing Irish women under UEFA investigation

October 14 – UEFA is investigating “potential inappropriate behaviour” by Republic of Ireland women’s players after they sang a pro-IRA chant following their World Cup play-off victory over Scotland.

Video footage circulated on social media after Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory at Hampden Park of the players singing ‘Ooh aah up the ‘ira’ in the dressing room.

Republic boss Vera Pauw and the Football Association of Ireland have both issued apologies over the incident but UEFA are taking a closer look at it.

European football’s governing body confirmed an ethics and disciplinary inspector will oversee the case, with information on the matter to be made available “in due course”.

On Wednesday, Republic manager Vera Pauw said the team apologised “from the bottom of our hearts”.
