USA women hold on to top FIFA ranking spot despite European defeats

October 14 – The USA have retained their place at the top of the FIFA rankings and ahead of the World Cup 2023 draw in Auckland, New Zealand, later this month.

The October ranking will decide the seedings for the Final Draw.

The US have lost to both England (2-1) and Spain (2-0) in the last two weeks. Below them Sweden jump ahead of Germany in the ranking while England are fourth and France fifth. Spain move up two places to sixth.

FIFA point out that “no fewer than nine teams between 11th and 20th changed positions, among them Belgium (20th, minus 1), who suffered the biggest points drop in the whole ranking (minus 32.46).”

Highest movers in the ranking were Estonia (96th, plus 10), who leapt ten places into the top 100, while Bangladesh (140th, plus 7) rose seven places.

With the rapid growth of the women’s game and international activity, so has the ranking grown with a record 187 teams now included.
