Four things you probably didn’t know about Samir Handanovic

November 29 – How well do you know Samir Handanovic, one of Inter Milan’s finest? Inter’s captain goalkeeper isn’t on duty in Qatar, but he is a special talent and both he and his club are catching the eye, especially with US investors.

He has been captain for 3+ years.

Born on 14 July 1984, Slovenian international Samir Handanovic is Inter Milan’s current captain. In 2019, he took over from Mauro Icardi as club captain and has proved himself worthy of the arm band.

Track record before joining Inter

Handanovic began his remarkable career in Slovenia before moving to Udinese in 2004. He did not play for Udinese for three seasons due to loan spells at Treviso, Lazio, and Remini. He established himself as a shot-stopper and silky passer of the ball at Udinese.

During his five-year tenure with Udinese, he started over 200 games, establishing himself as a real force multiplier for the team.

The former Udinese man was signed to replace Inter icon Julio Cesar shortly after the club’s historic treble-winning season. Taking over for Cesar came with the added burden of having to live up to such a great keeper and club legend.

Tough start

Handanovic’s early seasons at Inter were far from idyllic, with the club languishing in the Europa League and battling to finish in the top six of Serie A.

Handanovic, on the other hand, gave a good account of himself, appearing in the most crucial game of the season — the Derby Della Madonnina — and performing admirably. Despite Inter’s (by their standards) terrible season, he was named to the Serie A squad of the year despite playing 48 games for his club, 35 of which were in Serie A.

Lots of individual awards

In his first season with Inter, he almost bested Julio Cesar’s record of most clean sheets in a season (17).

Handanovic is a three-time holder of the Slovenian player of the year award and 3-time recipient of the Serie A goalkeeper of the year. For all his brilliance as a goalkeeper, he did not win a single-team trophy for 17 years. He finally broke this unwanted spell after Inter won the scudetto in 2021.

He is hardly ever mentioned among the most excellent keepers of his generation. Still, in all honesty, he is just as good as any of those mentioned as the greatest goalkeepers.

Great leadership abilities

Samir Handanovic is a proven leader, in addition to being a superb goalie. Handanovic was regarded as a leader in the locker room by all of his teammates even before assuming the captaincy.

Handanovic’s age may not be in his favor, but he still retains top quality and can battle with the best. When he led the Nerazzurri to their first league title in over a decade, he was 36 years old. They scored in their first 14 games and lost only one of their first 23.

Even though Handanovic is not as well-known as Julio Cesar, he is a really good close second.
