Tebas tweets ‘Great News’ at Agnelli resignation; LaLiga demand Juve sanctions

November 30 – LaLiga and its president Javier Tebas have wasted no time calling for punitive sporting sanctions against Juventus following the block resignation of Andrea Agnelli and his board on Monday.

The venom towards Agnelli was evident in a celebratory tweet by Tebas (pictured) saying: “Dear Andrea Agnelli, you have spent many years “manipulating” balance sheets, valuations, documents, to “deceive” public, sports authorities, shareholders, fans… and you also tried to DECEIVE the world of football with the kindness of the SUPERLIGA, your resignation It’s GREAT NEWS .”

The resignation of the Juventus boards follows a preliminary investigation by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office into fraudulent accounting around alleged hidden payments to players.

Prosecutors have been investigating since last year whether Juventus, which is listed on the Milan stock exchange, cashed in on illegal commissions from transfer and loans of players. Agnelli, vice president Pavel Nedved and CEO Maurizio Arrivabene are among 15 people who could potentially face trial.

LaLiga has long been in the vanguard of criticism and complaint against the club for what it claims has been the repeated breaking of UEFA’s financial fair play rules. LaLiga filed an official complaint against Juventus with UEFA in April 2022 reporting the financial fair play breaches being investigated by Italy´s Guardia di Finanza.

In a press statement, LaLiga said: “Following the resignation of the Juventus board of directors late Monday Nov. 28, LaLiga demands immediate sports sanctions to be applied on the club.”

LaLiga says that “Juventus accounted for transfers above fair value and under accounted for employee expenses, resulting in a breach of UEFA break even requirements. Additionally, the complaint charges that Juventus concealed the true wage bill of its players.

“This Monday, in the same statement announcing the resignation of its Board of Directors, Juventus acknowledges financial accounting irregularities, which are also aimed at misleading UEFA financial fair play authorities, among others,” said LaLiga.

LaLiga reiterated its call for the governing bodies “to promote financially sustainable football in Europe” and demand for “immediate sporting sanctions to be applied on the club by the relevant authorities”.

The Spanish league didn’t keep its complaint to Juventus only, highlighting that in April it “laid out complaints on financial fair play breaches filed with UEFA against Juventus, but also Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain.”

The statement concludes with the demand: “Protect our football.”
