LaLiga turns goal-scoring balls into collectibles with new tracking technology

December 1 – LaLiga is to make every goal-scoring balls available to fans, aided by the use of new technology that identifies the ball that ended up in the back of a net.

In any match up to 12 balls are distributed around the pitch to avoid time wasting. Identifying which was the ball that was used to score becomes almost impossible as balls rotate in and out of play.

Now a new technology developed by Gol-BallTM, identifies, certifies, tracks and registers the ball using blockchain technology, in a process that guarantees the ball was the one that was used to score.

LaLiga said the balls will be made available to fans as collectibles though how they will be sold and the kinds of values they will command is, as yet, unclear.

Samuel Eto’o, LaLiga’s ambassador, described the revolution Gol-BallTM represents in the world of collectibles.”Throughout my career as a footballer you would normally be given a ball only after scoring a hat-trick, but you were never sure it was the ball you actually scored any of the goals with. If we had been able to identify the goalscoring ball, my colleagues and I would have wanted all of them. If this is a historic moment for us, then imagine what it could mean for a fan to keep the ball.”

LaLiga will start its new range of collectible ball in 2023. More details of how they will be made available – presumably by auction – have yet to be released.
