Irish women’s pro-IRA singing celebration lands them a €20k UEFA fine

December 8 – UEFA has fined the Football Association of Ireland €20,000 for its women’s teams post match celebration and the singing of a song with a pro-IRA chorus after they beat Scotland 1-0 and qualified for the women’s World Cup finals for the first time.

The incident took place in the aftermath of the 2023 Women’s World Cup qualifiers play-off second leg match on October 11.

The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body said it had issued the fine “for the violation of the basic rules of decent conduct.”

Video posted on social media after the match showed the squad singing ‘Ooh ah, up the ‘RA’, a song supportive of the paramilitary Irish Republican Army that sought to end British rule in Northern Ireland.

While both the FAI and the team’s Dutch manager Vera Pauw apologised for the incident, it was too late to stop the viral spread of the video on social media.
