Tunisia keep faith in Kadri for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

January 3 – Tunisia have extended the contract of coach Jalel Kadri (pictured) for a year despite the Carthage Eagles’ group-stage exit from the World Cup in Qatar.

Kadri had offered his resignation in the wake of the Qatar elimination, but the Tunisian FA instead have retained the coach until the next Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Ivory Coast. Kadri’s immediate task will be to take on Libya in March.

In the run-up to the World Cup Kadri, one of five African coaches at the tournament, often repeated that his team nurtured the ambition to progress from the group phase, but in a group with France, Denmark and Australia, Tunisia fell short and so a first-ever knockout game in the World Cup remains elusive for the Tunisians.

They opened their campaign with a commendable draw against the Danish, but a defeat to Australia would prove to be their undoing before upsetting eventual finalists France in their final group match.

Kadri had been assistant-coach to Mondher Kebaier before taking over following a disappointing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. His previous track record as a club coach was mainly restricted to Tunisian football.
