Mbappé vs Messi again as FIFA announce final list of nominees for Best awards

February 14 – Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi are going head-to-head again in a FIFA competition, this time it is for the 2022 Best Player of the Year Award.

Does a hat-trick in the final and tournament top scorer make you a better player than the talisman of the winning team (all-be-it on penalties) who also scored twice in the final?

That decision will made by a jury respectively comprising the current coaches of all women’s/men’s national teams (one per team), the current captains of all women’s/men’s national teams (one per team), one specialist journalist from each territory represented by a national team and fans registered on FIFA.com.

The PSG teammates are joined in the final three nominations for the award by Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, who didn’t feature for France in Qatar and is unlikely to feature in the run-off for the top gong.

In the women’s Best awards the final three nominees are Beth Mead (Arsenal and England), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride/San Diego Wave and USA), and Alexis Putellas (Barcelona and Spain).

The winners of The Best FIFA Football Awards 2022 will be crowned at a gala evening on Monday, 27 February 2023 in Paris.

The final nominees in other awards categories are:

The Best FIFA Women’s Coach – Sonia Bompastor (Olympique Lyonnais); Pia Sundhage (Brazilian National Team), Sarina Wiegman (English National Team)
