May 31 – Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is returning to the club as a member of its supervisory board following the firing of CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.
Bayern said 67-year-old Rummenigge, Bayern’s former striker and then both CEO and vice-president before making way for Kahn in December 2021, was coming back to ensure the club’s continued success
“He is one the biggest figures in the history of our club, everyone knows what he has done,” Bayern president Herbert Hainer said. “His experience, his competence and his international network will enormously help Bayern be successful in the future, too.”
As a player Rummenigge scored 162 goals in 310 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern and won the European Cup in 1975 and 1976. He also won two Bundesliga and two German Cup titles before leaving for Inter Milan in 1984.
In a specially convened press conference on Sunday, Hainer explained why Kahn and Salihamidzic were sacked despite Bayern winning an 11th straight title on the last day of the season.
The club’s “performance in the second-half of the season was not how we imagine FC Bayern to be,” he said, adding however that they had “absolutely no thoughts” of firing manager Thomas Tuchel as well.
“We are absolutely convinced by Thomas Tuchel. He is one of the best managers in Europe and has shown that at several clubs.”
