June 1 – The U20 World Cup has reached the quarterfinal stage with Israel the surprise participants in Argentina after beating Uzbekistan 1-0 in the 97th minute.
Victory followed Saturday’s first-ever win at any age level in a World Cup finals, a 2-1 triumph over Japan. The Israelis will now meet Brazil who thrashed Tunisia 4-1 despite being a player down for the entire second half.
Italy and Colombia also advanced as did Nigeria who stunned the host nation 2-0 in front of almost 30,000 fans in San Juan, ending an unlikely campaign for the Argentines. Italy eliminated England with a 2-1 victory thanks to a late goal from the penalty spot.
Argentina did not qualify initially and only got a spot at the tournament when it replaced Indonesia as host.
