September 27 – LaLiga says it will continue its battle against racism through the Spanish courts after two more Spanish fans in Mallorca were sentenced this week.
The Court of Instruction No. 3 of Palma de Mallorca ruled on two separate racist
episodes carried out by the same, unnamed, man.
On February 5 in the Mallorca – Real Madrid match he directed insults at Vinicius Jr (pictured) and could be heard on camera calling him a monkey. Two weeks later in the Mallorca – Villarreal match directed similar insults at Samu Chukwueze.
He was found guilt for convictions for Crimes Against Moral Integrity with the aggravating factor of racial discriminationand sentenced to 12 months in prison, with the jail sentence suspended on the condition that he apologises and shows his remorse with a letter to Vini Jr and participates in an equal treatment and anti-discrimination programme.
He has also been banned from LaLiga and Spanish national team matches for three years.
“This is the second ruling issued for racist incidents that occurred in football stadiums and represents the consolidation of a legal standard regarding the criminal consequences of such behaviour,” said LaLiga.
In a second case in Mallorca involving a minor, an out-of-court settlement was reached. The minor had insulted and threw water bottles at Aurelien Tchouameni during the Mallorca – Real Madrid match on April 13.
The minor agreed to apologise, attend an anti-discrimination programme and pay a €4,000 fine for racist insults and a further €3,001 for throwing objects on to the field. He was also banned from stadiums for a year.
“Both actions are the result of LaLiga’s ongoing efforts, along with the clubs, which are increasingly receiving support from other fans to identify and report the perpetrators of these behaviours, with the aim of ensuring they do not go unpunished,” said LaLiga.
