The Azteca Stadium in Mexico City is, of course, their spiritual home; however, in Los Angeles – where they roared to victory over the Dominican Republic – and tonight in the heart of Texas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington versus Suriname, the team is welcomed by partisan support and rapturous anticipation.

Madrid court ruling averts La Liga strike

March 30 – The proposed strike of La Liga games for this weekend has been averted after a Madrid court upheld a challenge by six of the league’s clubs, Sevilla, Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Espanyol and Real Zaragoza.

If ever there was a lie to the old adage that sport and politics don’t mix, the festering row over a united British football team at next year’s London Olympics must rank as the ultimate example.

Ever since London won the right to stage the Games, the three non-English Home Associations have steadfastly insisted they do not want to know anything about a united team because of a perceived threat to their independence.
