December 6 – The ball being used at Euro 2024 will help produce faster offside and handball decisions, a welcome development after so many controversial calls in recent months.
A microchip inside Adidas’ Euro 2024 ball will assist referees at next summer’s tournament by sending precise ball data to video match officials in real time, thereby detecting when an infringement has been committed.
UEFA hope the state-of-the-art technology used in the tournament ball will help stamp out erroneous game-changing decisions.
The Fussballliebe has a similar design to that deployed by FIFA at last year’s World Cup. The microchip can apparently detect up to 500 movements per second – meaning it can accurately record when a ball is touched by a player.
Incidents where the ball has hit a hand in the box and could lead to a penalty is when the technology will most likely often be used, however it won’t overrule any decision made by officials.
UEFA says the ball will offer “unprecedented insight into every element of the movement of the ball, contributing to the video assistant referee (VAR) decision-making process”.
