Spain

The reigning world champions Spain will be the favourites to win Euro 2025 and claim their first-ever continental title.

What to expect

It’s hard to believe – given their recent dominance in both the men’s and women’s game – but Spain have never won the Women’s Euro. In Switzerland, they are primed for success. The Spanish have a stellar cast of players and a style of play that’s the envy of the rest of the world. Indeed, other nations have had to accept Spanish dominance since 2023.

At Euro 2022, La Roja were still restricted to a supporting role, exiting the tournament in the quarter-finals against eventual champions England. A year later, at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the Spanish reversed the roles and defeated England 2-1 in a final beset by controversy because of the Luis Rubiales kiss. It prompted a global scandal and the downfall of the then Spanish FA president, but the Spanish team remained dominant, adding the 2024 Nations League to their trophy cabinet.

They recently defeated England again. Spain can count on two Ballon d’Or winners and ten players from FC Barcelona in their squad. The star-studded cast includes Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas, Mariona Caldentey, Irene Paredes, Ona Batlle and Patri Guijarro. Jennifer Hermoso and Ivana Andrés however did not make the final list. Real Madrid goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez was also left out.

The squad will miss their experience, but has more than enough quality to take on its mission in Switzerland: win a first European title. They open their campaign with a local derby against Portugal but should progress from Group B, which also includes Italy and Belgium, with ease. Up next will be the runners-up of Group A, opening up an easy pathway to the last four.

Anything less but a spot in the final will be a considered a failure. In reality, it’s difficult to look past Spain. Their football represents the very best of the Spanish school and at the same time they have proven to be resilient with a penchant for late goals and comebacks. Who will challenge the Spanish armada – a group of artists who knew well what it takes to win?

Star players

Alexia Putellas (FC Barcelona) –  2021 Ballon d’Or winner and the midfield metronome of the team. A superb season with FC Barcelona. Missed out on Euro 2022 with an ACL injury, but featured at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Left-footed with great technique, excellent fitness and leadership skills.

Aitana Bonmati (FC Barcelona) – Another Ballon d’Or winner. She’s won just about everything – the World Cup, six Spanish league titles, three Champions League titles, and numerous individual accolades. Perhaps the most elegant player of all. A joy to watch with an understanding of the game and finesse that’s unmatched. Advocate for mental health and the Catalan cause.

Claudia Pina (FC Barcelona) – At 23, the forward represents Spain’s next generation and is a breakout star. Key in the Nations League. Two-footed and a natural goal scorer. Links up well with Putellas. A futsal player at first.
