History

The stadium is named after the village of St. Jakob an der Birs, which stood on the site from the 11th century. Many locals affectionately call it ‘Joggeli’.

First used as a sports ground in 1919, construction of the first grandstands began in 1937, halted by World War II until 1948. The outdated stadium was demolished in 1998 and the first match played at the new St. Jakob-Park – designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron – was between Basel and Lausanne Sport on 15 March 2001.
