June 13 – With the fear of ICE agents roaming around Los Angeles and spiriting illegal and legal immigrants away, supporter groups of the Mexican national team are rightly concerned ahead of the opening game of the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup between El Tri and the Dominican Republic.
Fan groups like Pancho Villa’s Army and Cielito Lindo fear for their safety amid the chaos.
Through their social media channels, Pancho Villa’s Army, Cielito Lindo, and the Patrones de México announced that out of solidarity and for the safety of the Latino community, they will not be attending the El Tri game against the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium.
“We couldn’t be in the stands if we couldn’t all be there … Our priority above cheering and supporting the national team will always be our family and their safety the message from one of the cheerleading groups.
The latest report on ticket sales for the opening game indicated a strong desire to watch their heroes with nearly 70% of the tickets (more than 50,000) for the game at SoFi Stadium already sold.
In light of the protests and immigration issues currently in the United States, former Mexico striker and icon of the national team Carlos Vela took to X to show his support for immigrants who are being persecuted by the authorities.
Vela posted on X ‘Quiero expresar mi más sincero apoyo y solidaridad. Los inmigrantes en California son gente trabajadora que merece respeto. No están solos ! 💪🏽’
‘I want to express my most sincere support and solidarity. Immigrants in California are hardworking people who deserve respect. You are not alone! 💪🏽’
For Concacaf, the timing of Trumps rein of terror couldn’t be worse and many people associated with SoFi Stadium are holding their breath ahead of the match on Saturday evening.
