Sweden wary of Pajor threat for Poland

July 8 – Sweden face Poland in Lucerne this evening with a place in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 quarter-finals within reach. A win for Peter Gerhardsson’s side, combined with Germany avoiding defeat against Denmark, would confirm their passage from Group C with a game to spare.

Filippa Angeldahl’s goal proved decisive in Sweden’s 1-0 opening victory over Denmark, and they’ll look to build on that result against a Poland side still searching for their first points.

Poland impressed in spells during their 2-0 defeat to Germany, showing structure and goalscoring intent despite the scoreline. Tournament debutants, they’ll be eliminated if they lose to Sweden and Germany avoid defeat in tonight’s other Group C fixture.

All eyes will be on Polish captain Ewa Pajor once again, with the Barcelona forward posing a key threat going forward. With 47 goals already this season, she needs no introduction.

Well aware of the threat both the forward and her teammates carry, Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson said: “I think Poland played very well against Germany, they had some good chances. Especially with Ewa Pajor, one of the world’s greatest players, we have to take care of her. We need to be good in transitions, defending deep. It’s going to be a difficult game but we need to play well.”

But Sweden remain favourites, and Poland coach Nina Patalon is under no illusion about what the Scandinavians will be like to play against, praising their ability to control the game.

“Sweden can manage the match brilliantly, its tempo,” she said. “They are a team with great discipline. They know when to accelerate and they use it perfectly. They also have physical qualities, which means that we will also have to be very vigilant on set-pieces.”
